What is DWAC | Signature Stock Transfer

There’s a certain amount of risk when transferring paper share certificates. There’s also the time it would take to process and ship said certificates. It could be beneficial to use the DWAC transfer.

What is DWAC?

The Deposit/withdrawal at Custodian is a way of transferring shares. It’s done via electronic means. The shares or paper certificates can become transferred to the Depository Trust Company. This is always done through a Fast Automated Securities Transfer (FAST) service. A FAST transfer agent will act as the distribution point.

In essence, DWAC is an efficient means for depositing securities. It goes straight into an investor’s account. This type of transaction sees the shareholder’s broker receiving the shares fast. This is because it’s done through digital means. There’s no need to print or mail the share certificate.

There are two ways of transferring between the DTC and broker/dealers. One is via the DWAC and the other is through the Direct Registry System (DRS). Both methods allow investors to secure securities in registered form. These are then secured on the transfer agent’s books instead of having them in physical form.

How the DWAC Works

The first order of business is to secure the services of a transfer agent that’s part of the FAST program. The investor will request their broker to deposit their shares into their account.

The broker won’t need to secure a physical certificate. The transfer agent will credit the shares to the investor’s account via electronic means. These will go through the DTC.

The DTC will then check with the transfer agent and verify the details of the transaction. The DWAC stocks will only become credited to the investor’s account once it’s approved. Compared to the traditional system, this process is much faster.

It also involves fewer parties. The transaction always includes the investor, the broker, and the custodian. The latter is often a bank. It also involves the DTC and the transfer agent. Each party has a key role to play.

There are a few requirements for using the DWAC. It’s not always a concern investors share as brokers will often deal with this. DWAC stocks must be eligible for restriction removal. Another option is for it to be free trading. It’s also important for the broker to be a DTC participant. The issuer is also required to become DWACeligible.

Why You Should Use DWAC

There are many advantages to using DWAC over conventional methods.

· Efficient and Fast Transactions

The conventional way of stock transfers entails the physical delivery of share certificates. Processing this can take weeks. DWAC stock transactions can become wrapped up in a few days at the least. Speed is crucial in volatile markets. It’s because even a slight delay can result in a major change in the share’s value.

The fast and efficient process of the DWAC means investors can take advantage of the market. They can make decisions and take action fast.

· Less Paperwork and Admin Fees

The DWAC method also means more savings on your end. There’s also less paperwork involved. Physical share certificates need manual handling. This often means printing, mailing, and storing the paper certificates. The broker would then need to track the document.

An electronic format does away with the other steps. There’s no need to print or store them. This means big savings for the investor and the broker. It’s because the method is more affordable. The operation is also streamlined for more efficiency.

· Access and Convenience

It’s natural for investors to worry about the physical copies of their shares. They become concerned about its safekeeping. There will also be questions on how to handle these documents. A DWAC stock lowers the risk of the certificates becoming lost or damaged. The process of selling and buying shares becomes more convenient too.
